At Strassburger Tile Perfection, we’re the experts in servicing all aspects of tiled showers. Making sure your shower is properly waterproofed is a forgotten essential to a shower’s longevity. Waterproofing membranes are key in this process.
All too often we get the call to service a shower stall that has sprung a leak. Whether water is coming through the walls, or through the ceiling in the room below, a cracked tile should not mean damage to other areas in the building.
A properly-built tiled shower stall needs to have redundancy. Before a single tile is set in a shower it should be waterproof to protect the structure of the building.
What type of waterproofing is best?
There are numerous ways to waterproof a shower enclosure. Before the sloped floor is even set, a heavy rubber membrane needs to be installed. This membrane will contain water within the enclosure if the floor tiles or the sloped pad fail in the future. This will save thousands in potential water damage in the rooms on the floors below the shower’s stall.
Once the sloped pad is set in place, the next step is to install a waterproof membrane on the walls, sills, and the sloped pad. There are a number of waterproof fabrics and now there are even paintable liquid membranes to choose from. The importance of these membranes is critical for the structure of your house, although the choice of the membrane can be left to your installer, as they will have a preference of which type of membranes to work with.
